Purpose: To investigate the correlation between contrast sensitivity test (CST) and visual field (VF) and optic coherence tomography (OCT) in patients with high tension glaucoma, a subtype of primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) and ocular hypertension (OHT).
Material and Methods: Forty patients with POAG, 55 patients with OHT, and 40 control subjects were included in this study. Full ophthalmological examination, VF Test by using Humprey Perimetry and CST by “Sinewave Contrast Test” were performed. RNFL thicknesses of subjects were scanned with the Cirrus HD-OCT.
Results: In POAG group, mean CST score was under normal limits at spatial frequency of 6 cpd and within normal limits but close to the lower limit at 18 cpd. There were differences among groups in CST scores at spatial frequency of 1.5 cpd. A positive correlation between MD and CST score at spatial frequency of 1.5 cpd and a negative correlation between PSD and CST score at spatial frequency at 1.5 and 6 cpd were determined in OHT group. A positive correlation between CST scores at spatial frequency of 1.5 cpd and average RNFL thickness, RNFL thicknesses at temporal and inferior quadrants and in POAG patients.
Conclusion: In our study, there was a reduction in CST score at middle spatial frequencies. Significant differences between POAG and control groups and OHT and control groups in CST score at spatial frequency of 1.5 cpd were found. The correlations found between VF and CST were not clinically significant. The correlations between OCT and CST in POAG group were clinically significant.
