SB. Ulucanlar Göz Eğitim Araştırma Hastanesi II. Göz Kliniği, Ankara, Uzm. Dr. Compliance and adherence with treatment in chronic iseases including glaucoma is crucial for successful treatment outcomes to minimize disease progression. Medication compliance and adherence in glaucoma, has been measured using a variety of methods and high noncompliance and nonadherence rates commonly have been reported. It is easy for physicians to mistake either medication noncompliance or lack of adherence with poor efficacy. Such errors result in unnecessary control visits, changes in a patient's therapeutic regimen or in surgery. Clinicians should identify patients who are at risk for medication underuse and develop strategies for minimizing it. Greater awareness by the physician of the widespread nature of nonadherence is a very important component of patient care.
Aim of this review is to summarize researches published on compliance, adherence and persistency in patients with glaucoma and to suggest approaches ophthalmologists to accurately assess patient compliance and persistency to improve these issues.
