Evaluation of Risk Factors in Patients with Primary Open Angle Glaucoma (High Tension Glaucoma) and Ocular Hypertension

Material and Methods: Forty patients with POAG, 55 patients with OHT, and 40 control subjects were included in this study. All participants were questioned about risk factors and full ophthalmological examination was performed. Central corneal thickness (CCT) was measured.
Results: There was no significant difference among groups in terms of gender. In POAG and OHT groups, the ratio of positive family history was statistically higher than controls. Positive family history of glaucoma in patients with OHT was significantly higher than with POAG. There was no difference among groups in the incidence of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, coronary artery disease and goiter. There was no statistically significant difference between groups in smoking rates. No statistically difference was found between groups in body mass index (BMI) based on weight and height measurements of patients. Among groups, there was no significant difference in ratio of patients with menopause and history of using hormone replacement theraphy. No statistically significant difference was found among three groups in spheric equivalence and the incidence of myopia. Mean CCT were found 523.97±37.33 μm; 546.75±33.55 μm and 558.62±52.35 μm respectively, in POAG, OHT and control group.
Conclusion: Family history of glaucoma, a commonly known risk factor, was found significantly higher in percentage in POAG and OHT groups than control group. Mean central corneal thickness in POAG patients was determined lower than in OHT patients and control subjects. Keywords : Primary Open angle glaucoma, ocular hypertension, risk factors
