Objective: To compare the early effects of intracameral licensed and unlicensed cefuroxime in prophylaxis of endophthalmitis after uncomplicated phacoemulsifi cation.

Materials and Methods: A total of 300 eyes of 268 patients who undergone uncomplicated phacoemulsifi cation surgery were included in this retrospective study. Intracameral unlicensed cefuroxime administered to 150 cases in group 1 and the licensed cefuroxime administered to 150 cases in group 2 were discussed. Patients were evaluated in terms of best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), intraocular pressure (IOP), central corneal thickness (CCT) changes, corneal edema, anterior chamber reaction and endophthalmitis at before surgery and postoperative 1. day, 1. week, 1. month.

Results: There was no difference in terms of demographics specs between two groups (p>0.05). There was no difference between groups of preoperative and postoperative BCVA, IOP, CCT (p>0.05). Fibrin reaction was observed in 4 eyes (2.7%) from group 1 whereas it was observed in 2 eyes (1.3%) from group 2. The difference was not statistically signifi cant (p=.416). Tyndall (1+,2+) was observed in 16 eyes (10.7%) from group 1 whereas it was observed in 12 eyes (8%) from Group 2. The difference was not statistically signifi cant (p=.440). Endophthalmitis was not observed in both groups in postoperative controls.

Discussion: There is no signifi cant difference between early period results of intracameral unlicensed and licensed cefuroxime in prophylaxis of endophthalmitis after uncomplicated phacoemulsifi cation. Keywords : Endophthalmitis, phacoemulsifi cation, cefuroxime
